Kindergarten

Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a French painter known for his style-Pointillism. Seurat applied tiny dots of color on the canvas. We talk about primary and secondary colors. We look at the painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of la Grande Jatte.

Henry Moore (1898-1986) was one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century. Much of his work is based on forms of the natural world. Moore searched for balance between open and closed spaces. We look at Moore’s sculpture Reclining Figure: Holes.

Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was an American Impressionist painter. She spent much of her life in France. Cassatt was best known for her paintings of mothers and children. We look at the painting Children Playing on the Beach.

First Grade

Max Weber (1881-1961) was a Russian born American painter. In the 1940’s, Weber painted scenes of his childhood in Russia. We talk about Weber’s painting The Adoration of the Moon.

Project: Family scenes based on Jewish holidays or special events

Anna Ticho (1894-1980) was an Israeli landscape painter. She is known for her watercolors, charcoal, and pen and ink drawings of the people, towns, and hills of Jerusalem. We look at the painting The Road to Jerusalem II.

Yaacov Agam (1928-   ) is an Israeli born sculptor and painter. He was a pioneer in the Kinetic Art movement. We observe the colors, shapes and vertical and horizontal lines in Agam’s work. We look at his work Double Metamorphosis.

Second Grade

Alberto Giacometti (1834-1966) was a Swiss painter and sculptor. He is best known for his elongated sculptures such as Tall Figure and The Chariot.

Project: Long thin sculptures

Dinosaurs The children make dinosaurs with model magic as a part of the Second Grade unit about dinosaurs.

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was an American artist. Homer painted many scenes of the sea and the woods in Prout’s Neck, Maine. We look at the painting Right and Left.

Project: Seascapes

Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) was a French painter interested in painting portraits, landscapes and still life scenes. We look at the following paintings: Self-Portrait, Still Life with Apples and Oranges, and Mountains in Provence.

Third Grade

Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was an American landscape painter. His family migrated to America from England in 1819. Cole depicted the natural scenery of his new country in such paintings as The Notch of White Mountain.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1970) was a French sculptor. He was able to express movement and character in his realistic sculptures such as The Thinker and The Burghers of Calais.

Franz Marc (1880-1960) was a German Expressionist painter. He was interested in the emotional values of color and in the portrayal of animals. We look at Marc’s painting The Red Horses.

Fourth Grade

Jean Arp (1887-1916) was a French painter and sculptor best known for his Abstract relief sculptures. We look at his relief sculpture Upside Down Blue Shoe with Two Heels.

Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) was born in Lithuania and settled in France in 1913. He was one of the leading Expressionist painters. Soutine applied his paint with thick brushstrokes. He painted many landscapes and portraits. We look at his portrait Modigliani.

Fifth Grade

Frans Hals (1582- 1666) was a Dutch portrait painter. Between 1620 and 1630, Hals painted five large group portraits of civic guards. We look at his portrait of The Laughing Cavalier.

Project: Portrait masks

Honore Daumier (1806-1879) was a French caricaturist, painter and sculptor. He was chiefly known as a political and social satirist. We look at his drawing The Crinoline in Snow.

Project: Scene depicting a problem and solution in society

Sixth Grade

Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684) was a Dutch painter of the School of Delft. He is known for his quiet peaceful domestic scenes. We look at his painting The Courtyard of the House of Delft.

Project: Canvas paintings of interior/exterior scenes

Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) was an Abstract English sculptor. Hepworth was interested in the relationship between space and mass. She created her sculptures with wood stone and bronze. We look at the sculpture Family of Man.
