Technology
The JPDS Technology curriculum closely follows the scope and sequence developed by ISTE, labeled the National Education Technology Standards (NETS). These are the basis for most statewide and district-wide standards, such as those for Maryland and Montgomery County. NETS lays out what skills a student should have at certain points of their academic career, but leaves open the question of how to teach those skills. The updated standards are available on the ISTE website.
We believe in using student-centered, project-based, exploratory learning. Children participate in projects where they get to work in small groups so that each child's strengths can be emphasized. Students in various grades will also practice English and Hebrew keyboarding, learn to do smart web searches, use graphic organizers, and enjoy educational games.
One of the foundational life skills is keyboarding. Students in grades 3-6 will practice keyboarding for 10 minutes each week. The TypingPal program is web-based. Therefore, it is available for students to use from home.
As JPDS continues to grow, the role of technology is being used in new areas throughout the school. We have recently implemented a new library circulation database and a student information database. We are also planning future purchases of classroom projectors, which can help teachers to 'break down the walls' and bring lessons alive.
