Kashrut Guidelines

The school kashrut policy reflects sensitivity to the diverse practices within the JPDS-NC community.

On Tuesdays and Fridays students may bring kosher meat products to school for lunch or snacks. On all other days students may only bring in dairy or parve products for lunch and snacks.

Foods brought into school or used for a school-related event held off campus must be certified kosher. This includes food served at in-school birthday celebrations, at-home parent socials, committee meetings and other school related get-togethers.

Food may not be prepared at home for any in-school celebrations (birthdays or otherwise). All food brought to school or used at school-related events must display one of the accepted symbols of kosher certification.

If unsure, please contact the Head of School, the Director of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, the Director of General Studies, or your child’s Judaic Studies teacher.

Many such items can be found in local supermarkets. Any item purchased at a kosher market, bakery or restaurant would be acceptable (see the link to the right).

Food to be served at in-school birthday celebrations must be brought to the front desk one day prior to the event, to check for kosher certification.
