Mathematics
The Mathematics program at JPDS-NC builds a foundation for continued learning and for confident application of mathematical knowledge by emphasizing basic computational skills, conceptual understanding, and flexible problem-solving strategies. Beginning with the early childhood program and continuing through each grade level at the school, JPDS-NC students tackle a wide range of mathematical problems, both in symbolic form and in real world contexts. Topics covered include arithmetic operations, numeration and orders of magnitude, probability, geometry and spatial awareness, measurement, patterns and sequences, and algebraic thinking.
Most students work in the Everyday Mathematics program, supplemented by additional resources that allow teachers to support and to extend their learning. Lessons combine direct instruction, discussion, cooperative learning opportunities, and use of hands-on materials and games to reinforce skills and concepts. Students learn to approach problems in multiple ways, and teachers integrate mathematical concepts into different areas of the curriculum, just as they draw on skills and knowledge developed in other disciplines to broaden and deepen their instruction in Mathematics. Beginning in first grade, homework exercises help students to secure their lessons and, consistent with the “spiral” organization of Everyday Mathematics, to review key ideas throughout the year.
JPDS-NC also provides opportunities for remediation and enrichment in Mathematics. Drawing on multiple sources of information, including faculty observation and assessment data, teachers differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of every student at the school. Starting in second or third grade, depending on the characteristics of each class, the school divides students into flexible groupings for Mathematics, allowing all lessons to proceed at an appropriate pace and with appropriate depth. Assistant teachers and the school’s Learning Specialist provide additional support either by “plugging in” to some classes or by periodically “pulling out” some students. Students with a demonstrated ability to bypass classroom instruction in the core elementary school curriculum and to secure these foundations independently have the option to join an Enriched Mathematics program, beginning in 2nd grade, with entry in subsequent years also a possibility. This program presents extension units on a wide range of mathematical topics and carries an expectation that participants will successfully complete Everyday Mathematics assessments after reviewing concepts and skills at home.
All students at JPDS-NC, depending on various age requirements, have the opportunity to participate in special programs in Mathematics, including the Maryland Math League, the Math Olympiad, and the “Problem of the Week” program overseen by a Mathematics specialist at the school. |
