Music

The Music curriculum at JPDS-NC is designed to promote a broad love of music and a deep appreciation for Jewish music in its myriad forms. Basic musical literacy, evidenced by the ability to read pitches, note values, and interpretive markings, is taught through innovative games as well as traditional exercises and achieved by the end of second grade. In the upper grades, students are encouraged to develop individual musical tastes through exposure to such diverse genres as classical, modern, operatic, symphonic, jazz, pop, Israeli, Sephardic, Mizrachi, Ladino, Arabic, African-American and other examples of world music as they relate to the General Studies curriculum. Students in all grades enjoy a wide variety of rich musical experiences and, on every level, we connect music with the visual arts, literature, geography, history and spirituality.

"The underlying goal of the music program is to build each student's awareness of the role that music plays in the world, with the intention that music will be understood, enjoyed, and appreciated."
