The Jewish Primary Day School believes in a strong physical education program grounded in skill acquisition and physical fitness. Through movement, games, and competition, students learn the concepts of teamwork, sportsmanship, and discipline. Through a warm-up period each class, students will increase their physical strength and stamina. They will be taught how to function as a group and how to take and receive directions. Our goal is for the students to have fun in an athletic setting
All grades participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge twice a year. This involves five individual events in which the students' scores are recorded and compared to national averages. The first run is for practice so that students can become familiar with the areas they need to work on in preparation for the next test. The final test is given in the spring. This process provides a good opportunity for students to set individual goals and to work to achieve those goals.
Throughout the program, students take part in relays, dodgeball, soccer, basketball, softball, obstacle courses, and Capture the Flag. By the end of the sixth grade, students are expected to know the rules of all cornmonly-used team games. Too often physical activity is not a priority. It is our goal at JPDS to develop well-rounded athletes who respect the sports in which they compete and the important role physical activity and physical fitness play in our lives. |
