Sixth Annual Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Lecture Receives National Attention

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen spoke Tuesday night with The New York Times columnist and JPDS-NC alumni parent David Brooks before 500 supporters of the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation's Capital in Washington, D.C. Mullen told the group he was “concerned about Turkey turning away from Israel” and that he hoped both sides will work to de-escalate current tensions. He also said in response to a question that in every conversation with his Egyptian counterparts, “they always reassert – with my asking – that they want to retain the peace with Israel.”  Of his Israeli counterparts, Mullen, set to retire in less than two weeks, said he learned an “ethos” of caring for his troops.  “At budget time, they told me, the first thing they do is write a check for their soldiers and veterans.”

Mullen spoke as part of our school's Rabin Lecture Series, named for the late Israel prime minister.  Past speakers have included former secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Mid-East peace negotiator George Mitchell and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.
