JPDS-NC Featured on Israeli TV
Daniel Yuval, an eleven year old from Ramat HaSharon, recently visited the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital to talk about his participation in the campaign for a mine-free Israel. Daniel, who lost part of his leg in a landmine incident earlier this year, now travels the world talking to political leaders and international media to raise awareness about the dangers of landmines.
In between meetings with members of Congress and officials at the Israeli embassy, Daniel took some time to talk to fifth and sixth grade students at JPDS-NC about his involvement with the organization Roots for Peace and about the effort to clean up landmines in Israel. He noted that he was the youngest person to address the UN in Geneva, Switzerland and showed off a special White House coin that he received earlier that morning from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The JPDS-NC students showed great curiosity, compassion and thoughtfulness as they questioned Daniel about his injury and his life. During his tour of the building, one of the sixth graders gave Daniel the tzedakah that her family had collected as a donation to his organization.
Daniel was vacationing with his family in the north of Israel last February when the incident occurred. He was playing outside in the snow with his younger brother when he tripped a landmine, causing an explosion and the loss of his right leg below the knee. Daniel was fitted with a prosthetic leg and has since made an extraordinary recovery. Daniel’s story inspired the Israeli public and political leaders to address Israel’s long standing landmine problem.
“I am very glad we had this program,” said JPDS-NC Head of School Naomi Reem. “I am extremely proud of Daniel and of our JPDS-NC children. Our children learned an important lesson as we celebrate Hanukah-resilience in the face of adversity.”
The program was filmed by Arutz Shtayim, Channel Two, of Israeli TV, as part of a special on Daniel’s U.S. tour. You can watch the video by clicking here.
